Hainan sees surge in Russian tourists amid weak domestic demand

THE FACT THAT? China’s Hainan province is seeing a surge in Russian tourism as it seeks to boost its local economy.

THE DETAILS Russian visitors have become the largest source of foreign tourists to Hainan, with arrivals more than doubling to around 510,000 and accounting for about a third of total international visitors. The influx has led to an increase in Russian-language services in hotels, retail and hospitality. The trend is partly due to limited travel options for Russians due to Western visa restrictions. Hainan has also expanded visa-free entry to include business and medical travel, increased international flight connections, and expanded the right to duty-free shopping for foreign visitors. Medical tourism is also gaining ground, particularly for treatments such as anti-aging and acupuncture.

THE WHY? The rise in Russian tourism reflects Hainan’s strategy of offsetting weak domestic consumption by attracting international visitors, while taking advantage of policy changes and infrastructure to stimulate economic activity.
