Former All-American Corridor Eric Penick died, Notre Dame announced on Saturday.
He was 71 years old.
His cause of death is unknown.
“We are deeply sad for the death of Eric Penick,” the Notre Dame Football X account published on Saturday. “We send our condolences to his family and friends.”
Penick played an important role in Fighting Irish’s career to a national championship in 1973, especially its most prominent 85 yards touchdown against USC.
In that season, the corridor ran for 586 yards and seven touchdowns in 10 games.
Years after retirement, Penick amputated his leg after his battle with diabetes, along with complications of several other injuries he suffered before in his life.
Penick, who was recruited in the 13th round for the Broncos in 1975, shared thesis experiences in his autobiography, “A Notre Dame Man: The Life, Lore and Rons of Eric Penick.”
