Petco has hatched a plan.

Long Islanders, budget aware In the middle of altitude costs.

“Real we sold through the first two lots,” said a store worker to the post, and added that a third shipment of approximately 25 chicks sold for $ 5.99 per pop is expected to arrive on Wednesday.

“We are in our last”

The PET retail chain at the national level Petco has launched a “pilot program” in five stores to sell female chicks that put eggs, included in a store in Highway Memorial veterans in Commack, New York. Google

The pilot program, which began at the end of March in five American stores, serves as the first incursion of the retailer in the sale of chicks throughout the year beyond the selected rural locations. The birds of various races come from an Iowa hatchery, said the store representative.

A corporate representative did not deactivate where the other stores are located, but the local worker confirmed that Comack is the only participating store in Long Island to do so.

However, local animals activists call Fowl Play, claiming that many of the birds are abandoned after being bought and even before putting eggs.

“First with Covid, and now with avian influenza, people are getting these animals, they think it is a cheaper way to obtain eggs, but in reality it is exactly the opposite,” John Di Leonardo, who adds abandoned birds of Utppick is spring due to the interest in the production of eggs in the home.

“Most people end by throwing them before putting a single egg,” he said. “People really don’t know what they are getting into.”

Di Leonardo, who has rescued a boxes thrown into chicks and many more schedules this year, reports that the permanent majority of abandoned birds cannot survive the elements for more than a day, and many of the mirrors -aspirators -“. Disappeared.”

The proper care of the birds is demanding, he said. An expert bird veterinarian may be up to $ 1,000 or more for a visit, and the installation and maintenance of adequate cooperative could thousands more to the budget of a bird lover.

“For one of those cheap [coops] That you get in the supply of tractors for $ 100, a mapache will enter immediately and kill all your slice, “said Di Leonardo.

In addition, by law, people have to buy at least six chicks at the same time, which increases the load, the store confirmed.

But while the worker said that the chicks are getting “really healthy,” Di Leonardo questioned whether the Comck store has someone on the site with veterinary knowledge to do that evaluation.

“They choose [the chicks] In the post office like everyone else, “the activist argued.” They are sent by mail without food or water, and many arrive dead. “

“Every year, I receive calls from postal workers who talk about how horrible thesis animals are created,” added Di Leonardo. “They are treated as plots, and they are crushed and die.” AFP through Getty Images

The new “pilot program” also contradicts a commitment that the pet store was made last year to Peta regarding its sales of rabbits, promising that it would be “Recommend a policy of only adoptionDi Leonardo said.

“Petco has really had a sad history for years,” said Colin Hanstock, associate director of Peta project strategy. “Petco sells many small animals … and all come from large and deplorable breeding mills.

Human Long Island and Peta are now planning a protest outside the Comck store to get attention to the problem.

In the Meanime, Di Leonardo only expects the number of abandoned birds to increase as a result of the flu of birds and birds more easily available in local stores.

“Petco is a multimillionaire company, I don’t see some animals sell … it will really increase its sales significantly,” he said.

“They will survive with or without that, so it is particularly atrocious that now.”

Petco corporate officials did not return comments requests.
