Michigan art student, Alejandro Gonzalez, drowns off coast of Mexico after rescuing friend during Cancun vacation

An art student from Michigan on vacation in Mexico died a daring attempted rescue to save his friend from a mortal ultride against the Costa de Cancun in Easter.

Alejandro González, 20, was taken to the sea by a strong current while swimming with a group of friends around 7:30 pm on Sunday, said his disconsolate mother.

Saginaw’s native, Michigan, had traveled to the Caribbean getaway with three high school friends before the tragedy occurred.

He had posed for a photo on the edge of the water the night he died, his mother shared.

“The image is from the night that entered the water, the smile on his face reminds me how happy he was with his friends and spending time in a new place. It’s good to know that he was so happy,” added Renee González.

The photo captured the smiling artist giving a thumb to the camera while standing in tropical water.

González was swimming when one of his friends was caught in a Riptide and the artist jumped and successful saved her, but “he lost himself in the process,” according to To a gofundme Prepared for your family.

His body was recovered by officials on Wednesday after a three -day search.

González graduated from the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Saginaw in 2022 and had a barista leg in a local coffee.

“Alejandro is a talented artist and a wonderful friend. A room is illuminated and is always up to a new project,” said Heather Shephard, the creator of fundraising.

“He is affectionate and fiercely loyal to his friends and family and is not afraid to try new things. He is intelligent, he has constantly high grades and high performance in everything he does.”

After graduating, González lent his artistic skills to the “great mural project” of his communities in 2023, decorating a public service mural with catsatics in the city of Sagniaw.

An improvised memorial under the mural was established to honor the artist along with a donation campaign for the local animal shelter in his name.

The crowdsourcing project, initially configured to help in the search, Bee is now used for donations that would finance transport costs to bring your family to your family.

“While it seems that Matt and I are going to Mexico, we will need help with the expense to take him home, and all the outskirts that come with a situation like this,” said Renee González.
