A Researcher’s View on Using AI to Become a Better Writer

It was then that AI could be more useful, he thinks. With some indications, a chatbot could provide immediate writing comments aimed at the needs of each student. It is possible that a student needs to practice shorter sentences. Another could be fighting with the structure of history and contour. The theoretically could meet the individual needs of an entire classroom faster than a human teacher.

In Meyer’s experiments, he inserted only after the first draft was carried out as part of the review process. In study Published in 2024, he randomly assigned 200 German high school students to receive comments from AI after writing an essay in English. Their revised essays were stronger than those of 250 students who also had to review, but did not receive help from AI.

In the surveys, those with comments from AI also said that they felt more motivated to rewrite than those who did not receive comments. That motivation is critical. Students are not humorous to rewrite, and without revisions, students cannot become better writers.

Meyer does not consider his experiment that AI is a great writing teacher. She did not compare it with the way in which the students’ writing improved after human feedback. His experiment compared only the feedback of AI without feedback.

The most important thing, a dose or the writing comments of AI were not enough to raise students writing skills. In a second new rehearsal theme, students who had previously received comments did not write better than the students who had been helped by AI.

It is not clear how many rounds of comments from AI would be needed to increase the writing skills of a student more permanently, not only to help review the essay in question.

And Meyer does not know if a student would do it because he will continue to argue with a bot of again and again. Maybe the students were willing to commit to him in this experiment because it was a novelty, but soon. That is the following on Meyer’s investigation agenda.

A viral study of mit

A much closest MIT study published earlier this year echoes Meyer’s theory. “Your brain in chatgpt“Went Viral Because It Seemed To Say That Using Chatgpt To Help Write and Essay Made Students’ Brains Less Hib. Fondsce Fondsce Fondsce Fertce Fore Students What Fondsce Fertce Fore Students What Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force Force strength force strength strength force strength fertce fertce fertce fertce fertce fertce fertce fertce fertce force force force.

Altheheh those results made headlinesThere were more in the experiment. The students who initially wrote an essay on their own received Chatgpt to help improve their essays. That changes to augmented chatgpt brain activity, in contrast to what the neuroscientists found the duration of the initial writing process.

These studies are added to the evidence that delaying a bit, after a little thought and initial writing, could be an optimal point in learning. That is something that researchers need to try more.

Even so, Meyer is still concerned with giving tools to very weak writers and young children who have not developed basic writing skills. “This could be a real problem,” said Meyer. “It could be harmful to use thesis tools too early.”

Check to learn?

Meyer does not think that it is always a bad idea for students to ask Chatgpt to write for them.

Like young artists, they learn to paint by copying masterpieces in museums, students can learn to write better copying a good writing.

Meyer suggests that students ask ChatgPP to write a sample essay that meets the assignment and qualification criteria of their teacher. The next step is the key. If students pretend it is their own piece and send it, that is a trap. They are also cognitive work downloaded to technology and port cried anything.

But the essay of AI can be an effective teaching tool, in theory, if students study the arguments, the organizational structure, the construction of sentences and the vocabulary before writing a new draft in their own words. Identally, the next task should be better if students have learned through that analysis and internalized the style and techniques of the model essay, said Meyer.

“My hypothesis would be whenever there is a cognitive effort with it, as long as there is a lot of time in the task and as a critical thought about the result, then it should be fine,” said Meyer.

Reconsidation praise

Everyone likes a compliment. But too much praise can drown learning, since too much water can prevent flowers from flourishing.

Chatgpt has a tendency to see praise in the thickness and the offers begin with banal adulation, such as “Good job!” Just when a student’s writing needs a lot of work. In the Meyer test of Wheter AI feedback, she can improve the writing of the students, she intentionally told ChatgPT not to begin with praise and instead go directly to constructive criticisms.

His parsimonious approach to praise was inspired by a Writing study 2023 about what motivates students to review. The study found that when the teachers began with general praise, the students were the last with the false impression that their work was already good enough, so they did not make the additional effort to rewrite.

In the Meyer experiment, feedback without praise, was effective was to make students review and improve their essays. But she did not establish a direct competition between the two approaches without praising in the face of praise, so we do not know with certainty which is more effective when students interact with AI.

Being tacaño with praise rubs teachers in the wrong way. After Meyer eliminated the comments, the teachers told him they wanted to restore it. “They wondered why the feedback was so negative,” said Meyer. “That is not how they would.”

Meyer and other researchers can one day solve the puzzle of how to convert the chatbots of AI into excellent writing coaches. But if students will have the willpower or the desire to renounce a written essay instantly is another matter. While Chatgpt continues to allow students to take easy out, it is human nature to do so.
