Christmas hosting is here! It’s truly the most wonderful time of the year, but let’s also face it: it can also be pretty stressful. Inviting family and friends over for a Thanksgiving feast or Christmas dinner is a way to get your heart rate up (hopefully in a good way!) and, as a newbie host, it can feel like the Super Bowl.
Earlier this year, I was getting pretty anxious about inviting friends over. I wanted everything to be perfect, but I’ve learned that creating a cozy and cheerful space doesn’t mean you have to thoroughly clean everything and manage every detail. The goal should always be stress-free entertainment! And a calm host sets the tone.

Simple Ways to Prepare Your Home for Guests
I’ve put together some simple holiday planning tips to keep things as relaxed as possible. After all, it is the busiest time of the year. Here’s how to prepare your home (and your mindset) for the holiday season, without losing your peace in the process.
Organize without overwhelming
I used to think that I shouldn’t invite guests until my entire house was organized and tidy. I am very glad that this is no longer the case, as I am not sure that my house ever be 100% organized, even if that is the goal. Preparing your home for guests may involve focusing on high-traffic areas and visible surfaces. You want your entryway, living room, and dining room to be clutter-free and your guest room prepared if you have overnight visitors. If you have to temporarily throw some things away in the garage or basement, do so. You can tackle your organization and order in the new year!

Create a cozy and attractive space
There’s nothing like walking into someone’s home and instantly feeling welcomed and cozy. Make sure there is a clear space to place bags and shoes at your entrance and have plenty of comfortable seating and refreshments available as soon as your guests arrive. I love having a candle in the entryway so guests are greeted with a nice scent, and I have a playlist playing in the background to create even cozier vibes. Since it’s the holiday season, decorate your home with garlands, greenery, and lots of candles. I love decorating the tree, our mantle, and creating a simple but beautiful tablescape!
Clean, but no deep cleaning necessary
You’d think a list of vacation planning tips would include deep cleaning your home, but guess again. Earlier this year, I thoroughly cleaned the inside of my microwave before guests arrived for a dinner party. I was really worried about every little detail in my house being spotless, and I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to. Clean your bathrooms well and vacuum quickly, but don’t stress yourself out cleaning the entire house. Your guests are there to enjoy your company, not to criticize your home.
Add simple touches to make guests feel welcome
You don’t need to impress your guests: you care about them! There are some thoughtful gestures you can do to make everyone feel comfortable and relaxed. It’s the little things like fresh towels, a lit candle on the dresser, a welcome note for overnight guests, extra chargers next to your nightstands, and a coffee station with all your favorite creamers for the next morning. Put yourself in their shoes and then add the corresponding small details.

Start preparing early
Hosting vacations can be simple and fun; It just requires a little advance planning. One of the best vacation planning tips is to give yourself enough time to get organized: planning the menu, setting the table, stocking up on food, and renovating your home. Spreading out the prep work keeps stress low and allows you to enjoy the process. A few minutes each day go a long way. To help you, here’s a simple holiday cleaning checklist you can follow the week before your event.
- Monday: Tidy up your high traffic areas
- Tuesday: Renovate your kitchen and bathroom.
- Wednesday: Wash bed linens and guest bedding.
- Thursday: Empty
- Friday: (the day before) Set the table and heal the atmosphere.
- Saturday: Enjoy your party!
When it comes to vacation accommodation, give yourself the gift of grace. Your guests will remember the comfort you create in your home, no matter how imperfect it may be. This time of year should be fun, not stressful, so be sure to prioritize your own joy as you celebrate the holidays with your loved ones. Happy hosting!
