Amy Hunt, Daryll Neita and Dina Asher-Smith could battle for European medals in the 200m on August 13 next year.
Thursday afternoon at the 2026 European Athletics Championships promises to be one of the best sessions of the week, especially if you’re a fan of the women’s events.
Molly Caudery is likely to return home with British hopes in the pole vault final, while there are also women’s triple jump and 3,000m steeplechase finals.
The highlight, however, could be the women’s 200m final with Britons such as Amy Hunt, Daryll Neita and Dina Asher-Smith among those battling it out for gold.
Hunt enjoyed a brilliant run at the World Championships in Tokyo in September when she won a surprise silver behind Melissa Jefferson-Wooden of the United States.
However, at the last European Championships held in Rome two years ago, Neita came within inches of winning the 200m title, losing by just one hundredth of a second to Mujinga Kambundji of Switzerland.
Then there is Asher-Smith, 2019 world champion and current British record holder.
Women were not always in the spotlight at these championships. The inaugural European event in Turin in 1934 did not feature any women’s competition. At the second European Championships in 1938, the women’s events were held in Vienna, two weeks after the men’s competition took place in Paris.
When the women’s events were finally held in the same venue as the men’s (in 1946, in Oslo), there were only four women’s track events, one of which was the sprint relay, plus five field events.
How times have changed. Women’s athletics has experienced a boom in recent years and events that were previously only for men, such as the pole vault, the hammer, the steeplechase and the 10,000 meters, have gradually been added to the women’s program.
This means that Thursday 13 August at Alexander Stadium will be a celebration of women’s athletics with four brilliant finishes to look forward to.

However, Thursday, August 13 is not entirely a “ladies night.” Of course, there are some men’s finals, including the discus, 800 meters and the conclusion of the decathlon.
