Look

In episode 211 of This Week In Space, Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik speak with Monolith Space’s Jacob Scoccimerra.

When one thinks about the diet of astronauts destined for Mars, oysters don’t usually come to mind… but they should. It turns out that the brave bivalves have a lot to offer space travelers, including water filtration and an immediate source of protein.

Scoccimerra, formerly of Nanoracks, began a research project with students at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, to design, build and operate a closed-loop automated support environment for oysters in a simulated space analog. It’s a fascinating discussion that may leave you hungry.
