THE FACT THAT? Russia is exploring increasing palm oil imports from Nigeria as growing domestic demand and supply diversification efforts create new export opportunities for Nigerian producers and processors.

THE DETAILS Speaking at the BusinessDay 2026 International Oil Palm Summit in Abuja, representatives of the Russian Trade Mission to Nigeria said Russia sees Nigeria as a strategic agricultural partner with great potential in palm oil production and processing. The Russian palm oil market is estimated to reach up to one million tonnes a year, with demand currently largely dependent on imports. Industry stakeholders highlighted Nigeria’s ambitions to expand beyond raw materials production towards deeper processing and industrial value creation. This development comes as Nigeria continues its efforts to modernize its palm oil industry, reduce dependence on imports and strengthen export competitiveness through investments, processing improvements and supply chain development.

THE WHY? The move reflects growing international demand for diversified agricultural supply chains while positioning Nigeria’s palm oil sector for greater participation in global trade and value-added manufacturing.
