Editor’s note: We thank the NIKE Pre management team (Joint meeting directors, Jody Smith, Juan Capriotti, with Jeff Oliver ash Communications Director) for their responses to our written questions. We had originally requested a Zoom interview, but NIKE Pre was in crazy mode.

As someone who has been fortunate enough to have had good access to the lead-up and final days of competition preparation, I can tell you this:

The Preclassic NIKE, in my mind, it’s a true litmus test of how I runIt is seen at the NIKE headquarters. Notice how that is not answered in the questions answered below.

Tom Jordan defended the legacy of Steve Prefontaine and the NIKE Pre Classic for many decades, and Tom should be appreciated for that, every day.

RunBlogRun, 1. When does NIKE Pre management start setting up fields for the event?

NIKE Preclassic: The Diamond League assigns disciplines for each meet in the fall before the next season. The initial effort to set up the fields begins shortly thereafter.

RunBlogRun 2. Do you work on the event all year round? How big is the full-time staff?

Yes, the organization, planning and execution of The Prefontaine classic They are tasks that last a year. TrackTown USA Full-Time Staff is responsible for planning and executing the organization’s entire event portfolio, including The Prefontaine classic. TrackTown USA has a full-time staff of 29 and 30 additional who joins from April to August as seasonal staff.

RunBlogRun, 3. What is the most difficult part of the logistics of the NIKE Pre Classic? Visas? Travel? Discovering food for people from many countries?

NIKE Preclassic: Live up to the standards set by the event’s namesake: Steve Prefontaine – and events previous Meet the director, Tom Jordan. We take our role as stewards of The Prefontaine Classic legacy very seriously. We honor the Pre and all those who have turned the Pre Classic into the best meeting in the world by tirelessly searching for ways to improve it each year.

NIKE Preclassic: TrackTown USA iis focused on Classic prefontaine and all the events we support throughout the year.

RunBlogRun, 7. For many years, the NIKE Pre Classic was, for observers, the litmus test of how NIKE saw running that year. Is this still a valid comment?

NIKE Preclassic: No response. Nike best answers this question directly.

RunBlogRun, 8. What should fans know about the NIKE Pre Classic that most don’t?

NIKE Preclassic: While the Prefontaine Classic is revered as an annual Eugene tradition, it is also celebrated around the world. Since joining the diamond league, he Pre Classic has earned the highest season competition score five times among the more than 1,000 annual global invitational meets. (2025, 2023, 2017, 2016 and 2013).

  • Larry Eder has been involved in the sport of track and field for 52 years. Larry has experienced sports as an athlete, coach, magazine editor, and now, journalist and blogger. His first article, on Don Bowden, America’s first sub-4-minute runner, was published in RW in 1983. Larry has published several track and field magazines, from American Athletics to the US version of Spikes magazine. He currently manages content development and marketing for RunningNetwork, The Shoe Addicts and RunBlogRun. Of RunBlogRun, his daily pilgrimage with the sport, Larry says: “I have to admit, I love traveling to faraway competitions, writing about the sport I love and the athletes I respect, for my runblogrun.com readers, which is what I’ve done most in my life, except maybe running.” He also does some updates for BBC Sports on key events, something he really enjoys.
