Antioch announces ​​permanent police chief, assistant city manager – The Mercury News

ANTIOCH – The search for a permanent police chief and city administrator assistant is over.

Interim boss Joe Vigil He was appointed Thursday to direct the Antioquia Police Department, while Brad HelfenbergerWho was a recent interim assistant administrator of the city, will now assume the role permanently.

The city said the movements indicate a “strong and deliberate step towards stability, responsibility and progress.”

The administrator of the city of Antioch, Bessie M. Scott, said the quotes will strengthen leadership in the city.

“The vigil chief and Helfenberger understand the unique challenges facing Antioch. They have demonstrated every vision, the ability to inspire and a deep passion for making Antioch a great place to live and work,” Scott said in a statement on Thursday.

According to the city, the appointment of Vigil establishes the “framework for a new future” for the Antioch Police Department, one rooted in transparency, reform and constitutional surveillance.

With vigil, Scott said the city will continue working with the United States Department of Justice After scandals that involve their police department and affirm Antioch’s commitment to “significant change.”

“This will not be the same police department,” Scott said. “We have folded a corner. This leadership solidifies our address and our resolution.”

Scott believes that Vigil is the “right leader” to boost the police department.

“Together, we are committed to guaranteeing a culture of responsibility, transparency and the principles of constitutional surveillance. This is a decisive time for Antioch,” Scott said.

Vigil has been appointed Interim Police Chief of Antioch twice. First he was appointed for the position in 2023, after the retirement of Steven Ford.

In January, vigil, again as an interim boss of the city, a few days after the city reached an agreement with the Department of Justice to increase supervision. He replaced Brian Addington, who recently retired again.

Vigil has 25 years of experience in the application of the law, having worked with police departments in Sacramento, Richmond and Antioch. He recovered a degree and mastery of the State University of California, Long Beach.

Helfenberger, who has more than 25 Years of Experience in Municipal Government, originally joined antioch as the city’s recreation department director in February 2021.
