Abel Kipchumba will defend the crown of his men in the career of AJ Bell Great North on Sunday (September 7) with Eilish McColgan leading the female alignment.
Kipchumba, who won 12 months ago in Tyneside at 59:52, will face the competition of fellow Kenyan Alex Mutisa Munyao, the winner of the London Marathon 2024.
Bashir Abdi, European record holder for the Belgium Marathon, and 2021 Great North Run Marc Scott champion is also in the men’s elite field.

Kipchumba said: “I am very happy to return to Great North Run again this year. It was a great honor to win one of the world’s largest media in my first attempt. I know I have a difficult challenge.”
In the women’s event, McColgan will face Sheila Chepkirui in Kenya, who finished third behind McColgan in the Commonwealth 2022 10,000my games came out victorious in the Marathon of New York 2024.
They will join on the starting line by Great North Run Champion of 2016 and 2018, Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya.

The male wheelchair inputs include last year’s runner -up Sean Frame, the Commonwealth Simon Lawson and Rafa Botello of Spain, while in the women’s race Mel Nicholls and Rita Curucca or Italy are among the contestants competing for the north of the victory.

Around 100 guest elite athletes from all over the United States, Ethiopia, Kenya, Japan, South Africa and Europe will participate in the Bell Great North Run Annual, completing the 13.1 mile course from Newcastle to South Shields.

Elite athletes will align with 60,000 runners in the 44th Great North Run, cheered by more than 200,000 followers that cover the iconic route of the course from the center of the city of Newcastle to the coastal city of South Shields.

The 2025 AJ Bell Great Run concludes a race weekend festival with the beginnings with the large north of 5 km on Friday before Junior and Mini Great North races on Saturday.
