Rematches in Shanghai and returns of champions Crouser and Kebinatshipi

XIAMEN (CHN): El segundo encuentro chino de la Wanda Diamond League 2026, en el estadio Egret de Xiamen el sábado, presenta varias rivalidades renovadas desde el encuentro inaugural en Shanghai. Four disciplines present very similar lineups to those of a week ago, including those in which the world champions were defeated (Faith Cherotich, Cordell Tinch, Karsten Warholm). Three other champions (Valarie Sion, Collen Kebinatshipi, Ryan Crouser) begin their international campaigns this season. The main session begins at 19:04 local time (11:04 GMT). As the meet is only in its fourth edition and it is early in the season, several meet records and world leaders are expected. After his recent improvements in the 100m and relay appearances, all eyes are on Collen Kebinatshipi in the 400m.

Brief event-by-event previews

Women

200 meters: An almost identical field to Shanghai, with the top six from last weekend due to the race. Shericka Jackson won in 22.07 over Shaunae Miller-Uibo in 22.26.

1500m: Birke Haylom aims for consecutive victories. World silver and bronze medalists Dorcus Ewoi and Jess Hull are also part of the field.

Steeplechase: Peruth Chemutai and Faith Cherotich renew their rivalry after 1-2 in Shanghai. But let’s look at Olympic champion Winfred Yavi, who will make her season debut.

High jump: World silver medalist Maria Zodzik and 2022 world champion Eleanor Patterson are part of a very open event. 2024 Olympic bronze medalist Iryna Gerashchenko also continues her return from maternity leave.

Disk: Valarie Sion makes her international season debut after 73.10m in Ramona. She will face Jorinde van Klinken and Silinda Morales, the silver and bronze medalists behind Sion at the World Championships, as well as local ace Feng Bin.

Javelin: The open event features Olympic champion Haruka Kitaguchi, along with top Europeans Elina Tzengko and Adriana Vilagoš. Yan Ziyi, 18, also competes, although the athlete with the best record of the season is the Norwegian Sigrid Borge (63.16 m).

Men

100 meters: Can Gift Leotlela make it back-to-back wins after a 9.97 win in Shanghai? He faces a nearly identical field, including Ferdinand Omanyala and Kenny Bednarek, who were second and third, respectively.

400 meters: World champion Collen Kebinatshipi takes on world indoor champion Christopher Morales-Williams and Olympic bronze medalist Muzala Samukonga. Zakithi Nene and Bayapo Ndori are also worth seeing.
