Commonwealth Games
He Commonwealth Games 2026 will take place in Scotland (mainly Glasgow) from July 23 to August 2. There will be more than 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories competing at Glasgow 2026 in 215 medal events across 16 sports. 10 for able-bodied sports and six for integrated sports. He ten sports are athletics, basketball, petanque, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, judo, netball, swimming and weightlifting.. It will be the smallest sports program in the competition since 1994.
Founded in 1930 as the British Empire Games, The future of the event has been in doubt in recent years. The 2018 Games in Gold Coast, Australia were excellent. The 2022 Games were scheduled for Durban, South Africa, but Durban was cancelled, leaving Birmingham to pick up the pieces at short notice. Melbourne was to host in 2026 but withdrew due to cost. Gold Coast’s bid to intervene was vetoed by the Australian government, vetoed in the sense that Gold Coast was told no federal funds were available. Glasgow stepped in with an offer of reduced games. However, CWG 2026 will feature the largest number of parasports events in the competition’s history, with 47 medal events scheduled across six integrated sports.
As far as athletics is concerned, the Glasgow venue in 2014 used Hampden Park, the national football stadium, and spent months installing a track in a 50,000-capacity stadium. This year athletics will take place at Scotstoun, a stadium with a capacity of 11,000. I write this on the day the games begin, when it is reported that 500,000 tickets remain unsold.
The athletics program, which will last six days with long morning and afternoon sessions, will begin on Monday, July 27.
