The hacker behind the violation of data aimed at Coinbase users mocked Blockchain Zachxbt researcher with a message of Ochain after an important crypto exchange.

On May 21, the hacker used Ethereum transactions input data to write “L Bozo”, followed by a Meme video or a NBA player James Worthy smoking a cigar.

The message occurred after the attacker changed around $ 42.5 million of Bitcoin (BTC) to Ether (eth) through Thorchain.

Zachxbt marked the message on his Telegram channel, linking it to the same entity responsible for the violation of coinbase data that affects at least 69,400 users.

On May 22, Blockchain Peckshield’s security firm reported that the hacker had continued to move funds, exchanging 8,697 ETH for 22 million DAI (DAI). A separate but closely linked address, which received 9,081 ETH through Thorchain, also turned the assets into 23 million DAI.

Coinbase hit demands after rape

Coinbase’s violation, first informed in a presentation before the office of the MAINE attorney general, occurred in December 2024 and was discovered on May 11. Stolen data include names, directions of origin and other personal information.

After the dissemination, the attackers demanded a rescue of $ 20 million in Bitcoin to avoid the release of stolen data. Coinbase rejected and did not resort to a $ 20 million reward for information that leads to the identification of computer pirates.

The company estimates a possible financial impact between $ 180 million and $ 400 million due to remediation costs and customer compensation.

Coinbase has also faced a wave of demands after revelation. At least six legal complaints were filed on May 15 and 16, and the plaintiffs accused the exchange of not implementing adequate security measures and lover their response to the violation.

Thorchain under scrutiny for criminal use

The use of Thorchain coinbase hacker to exchange $ 42.5 million in Bitcoin in ether occurs when the protocol faces a growing scrutiny about its role in the facilitation of illicit transactions.

In March, the platform was criticized after its exchange volume increased after the Bybit trick of $ 1.4 billion. The protocol generated more than $ 5 million in revenues after processing $ 5.4 billion in exchange volume, with more than $ 1 billion in a single day.

Blockchain security companies identified the Lázaro Group of North Korea as the main suspect, using Thorchain to wash a significant part of stolen funds.

The controversy intensified when a Thorchain developer, known as “Pluto”, resigned after a vote to block the transactions linked to Lázaro was exaggerated.
