Help! What Does Self-Care Even Look Like This Late in the Year?

Dear we are teachers,

I’m fighting. The other day, while putting gas in my car, a child in the back seat of another car pointed to me and said: “Look, mom! A witch!” (To be fair, I was on the linen attire that I use to teach “Strega Nona”.) But I hate that every year at this time, I fight so hard with basic self -care: sleep enough, handle stress and juggle with the million or tar. What can I do to combat stress that will not exhaust me more?

—In knowledge of a self -care

Dear BSSC,

Oof. This is one of the difficult moments that we all fear. It is quite bad when you do not feel that you are at your best, but it is another problem completely when other people, even Ahlid without bad intentions, call it.

For what is worth, this is a Difficult time of the year for all. My students feel it. My colleagues feel it. I’m sorry. Burning at this time of the year is incredible, and you are certainly not alone.

I really appreciate This list of tips to avoid exhaustion. A key I maintain is to make space for breaks and do something for yourself. The breaks are key. Taking time to do a Calendar auditJust for next week, it helps me feel better. Intentionally plan some time to take care of yourself.

I also like it a lot KC Davis’s Work, including the book How to keep the house while drowning. Davis’s ideas about the reorganization of manageable ways help when I feel too rejected. The book is short, but that is too much, the site sacrifices Various resources. Davis has also conducted several interviews (such as This” Thisand This Ted talk) that sacrifice great ideas too.

Finally, do not be afraid of Draw limits And protect your peace. Feel empowered to say “thank you but no thanks” when necessary.

I hope you get to the end of the year feeling strong or at least with some good witch vibrations. Good luck, and I believe in you!

Dear we are teachers,

Is it expected to respond to emails when it is out of license? I have reviewed my email periodically to keep it manageable. However, some ask me to respond with certain dates. Should I have to answer?

“Leaving the entrance tray behind

Dear Ltib,

This question is an excellent one that is overlooked!

Generally speak, The answer is not probable.

If your license is related to the doctor (EC, maternity license, anything regarding FMLA, etc.), or some job payment payment situation may be violating the terms of your license if you respond. So, if that is the case, you would configure an automatic response and direct the messages elsewhere.

If you are not sure if your license qualifies as something that does not respond, consult with human resources or administrator (department head, vice president, principal). They can clarify where to lead people who ask questions. If your license is raped, I would contact the union if you are a member or human resources.

The only variable to consider is that it is in some type of professional license sponsored by the school. Last year, I was part of a scholarship of the Faculty, so although I was not in the classroom, I was still working for my school in another capacity. If your license still implies that the school actively uses, it could be fair for you to participate. Again, I will verify with HR or administrator if it is not sure.

In addition, if something that you feel strongly is happening, as if they were planning to make a curricular change in your department and want your voice to be heard, it is probably better to find a way of regret. While their license must be honored, people still need to make decisions and advance in more significant decisions.

I hope your license provides some relief or respite. Send you a lot of love and care!

Dear we are teachers,

I totally agree with the qualified tasks. At the time I give them or public something in the grade book, students rush to discuss for more points without even reading the comments. It is as if they care more about the qualification than learning. How does the approach to growth and understanding change, and I maintain my sanity in the process?

– Stop the battle of points

Dear STPB,

I was having a conversation with my department chair about “grade of grade”. It aggravates me absolutely. I think that Degree inflation And an approach to the product on the process has led to a culture where some students fight for each point.

There are some great ideas in How to change this cultureIncluding providing recoveries (as a writing professor, I allow resumes) or even Less frequently. These are great changes, probably at the beginning of a course or within a department/level of grade/school, but they are certainly possible.

At this time of the year, I give so many clear and significant comments as I can gather. I have students about the rubric and equally itself before they present something. I have your classmates to qualify your drafts in a rubric before they send something. For more formative tasks, I tend to make a credit/incomplete/without credit rating to minimize some of the grubes (I cannot give points to the things that are not there).

Once I know, I have strong systems and a clear language instead, he thought, I also stay. They redirect them to the study or rubric program. I am happy to meet them and explain my qualification if they are, but the chances of changing the qualification, unless a fog has been done, and for what I apologize profusely!

Some of that is to build a level of trust with me, only this at the end of the year: if they know that I will value but also prepare me to hold them responsible, I find that the students receive the message that they worry me and I push myself. Sometimes, the limits we have are love and care: we want them to be better, so we ask better.

Good luck and sending a lot of love and care.

Dear we are teachers,

Summer is less than a month, and my director has just announced that he expects our entire team to do four weeks or training in July. His email specifically said that this training is not optional. But how can that require that with such late notice? I have no plans, I just don’t want to spend half or my summer in PD! What do I have to do?

“Pd Summer.”
