The recently dismissal of Dr. Carla Hayden, the 14th Library of Congress, has brought renewed attention to the Library of Congress: What exactly is the Library of Congress and why does it matter?
The Library of the Congress leads the institution and is appointed for a period of 10 years. Hayden, who played the role until May 2025, was a remarkable figure in the history of Loc. She was the first woman and the first African American to lead the institution, and her mandate focused on:

The Congress Library serves as a research arm of the United States Congress and preserves the cultural and intellectual heritage of the Nation through its fixed collections of books, manuscripts, maps, music, movies and digital resources. It also provides public access to historical documents, supports the copyright registration and sacrifices educational tools for teachers, students and researchers.
It is the largest library in the world, home of more than 170 million articles, including books, manuscripts, photographs, maps, sound recordings and movies. It serves multiple roles:
- Research arm of the United States Congress: Its main mission is to provide research and analysis to the members of Congress and their staff.
