Americans are divided over housing impacts of immigration, tariffs

At the same time, 38.5% of respondents expressed the opposite opinion: that less immigrants would reduce the demand for homes, which would make homes more affordable.

The survey, conducted by Redfin between March 28 and April 28, surveyed 4,000 owners and interest rates throughout the country.

Political affiliation strongly influenced answers. Around 67.1% of Democrats agreed that lower immigration levels could lead to less high homes and prices, compared to only 38.7% of Republicans.

Respondents were similarly divided into the role of tariffs in real estate market configuration.

Almost 68% agreed that tariffs contribute to the appreciation of household price and help keep high interest rates, of which they can suppress the activity of housing purchase. But about 35% believed that tariffs could boost the economy and help more Americans to pay homes.

Again, the answers were divided along the lines of the matches. Most Republicans (55.3%) said they believe that tariffs will strengthen the economy and improve affordability, but only 23.9% of Democrats said the same.

Redfin has previously reported how economic uncertainty, including groups in tariff policy, is shaping consumer behavior.

In April, the company said that almost one in four Americans had canceled plans to make an important purchase, such as buying a house or a car, due to the freshly promulgated tariffs of President Donald Trump.

The last survey suggests that tariffs remain a source of anxiety for many.

Approximately 43.1% of respondents said they were very or something concerned about the potential impact of tariffs on their local real estate market and properties. Only 33.1% said they had hope.

In immigration, numbers leaned slightly towards optimism. About 40.7% of respondents said they felt hopeful about the broader economic effects of immigration or reduced deportations. Meanwhile, 26.3% reported feeling worried.
