Oakland Athletics Designated hitter Brent Rooker responded to league officials. On Thursday, NY Post social editor Dan Bartel sparked controversy with a tweet.
“Baseball needs to have a deadline for free agency. Example: If you don’t sign by January 15, you can only sign a one-year contract.”
The situation concerns an MLB free agent who remained unsigned until January, and upper management suggested defining the issue using a timeline.

Rooker gave a concise response to Bartel:
“I’m only addressing this because it’s also been mentioned and raised by higher-ups in the league, but this is pretty close to the most anti-gambler idea you can have.”
Rooker also expressed concern as many people responded to his “Anti-player” tweet. Rooker asked, “What difference does it make if a guy signs on December 1st instead of February 1st? How do those extra 2 months negatively affect the fan experience?”
Veteran player Justin Turner also intervened to reflect his opinion with a focus on incentives rather than an “anti-player” idea:
“There can’t be a penalty for teams; that’s always going to end up hurting players. It has to be some kind of draft compensation or revenue-sharing bonus (there’s a lot of tax money) for signing multi-year deals before a certain date. They may not be perfect solutions either, but it has to be a reward.”
Brent Rooker became a 2025 Silver Slugger finalist.

Brent Rooker was a finalist for the silver bat by 2025, along with his colleagues Shea Langeliers and Nick Kurtz. Athletic first baseman Nick Kurtz won the Silver Slugger in 2025.
Rooker signed a five-year, $60 million contract extension with the A’s in January 2025. He joined the team in 2023 and doubled his career plate appearances, hitting 30 home runs. In the 2024 season, he had an elite performance with a .297 batting average, 39 home runs, and 112 RBIs.
In 2025, Rooker became an All-Star and represented his team while hitting a notable home run for the American League in the game played in Atlanta at Truist Park. In July 2025, Atlético’s official pages shared a post reflecting their pride, calling it “Proud of our boy.“
On the mound last season, Brent Rooker also had a decent performance with a .262 batting average, 30 home runs and 89 RBI.
