X is shutting down Communities because of low usage and lots of spam

Released in 2021When the company was still known as Twitter, communities were intended to provide users of the social network with a place to connect with each other around shared interests. Now, X is closing the feature forever, saying it was overrun with spam and was a pain to manage.

Furthermore, Nikitia Bier, product manager at X, pointed out that almost no one used them.

“Communities had great insight but were used by less than 0.4% of users, yet they contributed to 80% of spam, financial scams and malware reports on X,” Bier. wrote at X, explaining the company’s thinking behind removing the high-profile feature.

“Of the handful of communities that were successful, most were user acquisition channels for Kick or compensated clipper communities.”

Beer even mocked X’s failed Communities project as a “Temu version of subreddits,” a reference to the groups found within the most popular interest-based social network, Reddit.

However, he noted that there were some good communities in the mix that will have to migrate elsewhere, but largely suggested that the feature was not worth maintaining given its overall low usage.
